The municipality of Skurup votes through a ban on hijabs in the schools

December 19, 2019

On Monday, 16/12, the Skurup City Council, led by the Swedish Democrats party (SD), passed a new legislation which prohibits the wearing of a hijab in the schools. The prohibition would apply to both students and staff.

According to various newspapers, the motion, proposes a ban on “headscarves, burka, niqab and other garments intended to hide the identity of students and staff”.

This has of course been met by a wave of protests on social media where it is believed that the motion is based on racism, and that it will also lead to exclusion and counterproductive for integration.

When the prohibition will be put into practice is still unknown, and it lies with the municipal officials, the motion’s author, Lars Nyström (SD), announces.
